Robert Anthony Inman war ein US-amerikanischer Pädagoge, Journalist und Autor. Inman war der Sohn von Verne Inman, M.D., dem ehemaligen Vorsitzenden der Abteilung für orthopädische Chirurgie der UCSF. Er wurde in San Francisco geboren und besuchte die Grattan School und die Lowell High, wo er die höchsten Auszeichnungen erhielt. Als er aufwuchs, arbeitete er Sommer als Manager der Headen Park Farm, einer Farm in Santa Clara, Kalifornien, die 1852 von seinem Ururgroßvater Benjamin F. Headen gegründet wurde. Das Farmhaus ist heute das Inman-Headen Museum. Inman schloss sein Studium in Stanford 1952 mit Auszeichnung ab und erhielt nacheinander ein Fulbright-Stipendium für deutsche Literatur in Graz, Österreich. Während dieser Zeit lernte er Joan Marshall bei einem Neujahrstreffen von Stanford-Freunden in Wien kennen. Sie heirateten 1958 in Denver. Nach 21 Jahren Ehe wurde das Paar einvernehmlich geschieden, blieb aber gute Freunde. Sein ganzes Leben lang auf das Schreiben konzentriert, verfasste Inman zunächst ein Stück, das vom Ensemble Kaleidoskoptheater in Wien aufgeführt wurde.
