Rufus King
Rufus King is an American lawyer, politician and diplomat. He was a Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress and the Philadelphia Convention and was a signatory to the US Constitution in 1787. After forming a new Congress, he represented New York in the US Senate. He went on to become a leading member of the Federal Party, being the party's last candidate in the 1816 presidential election. The son of a successful Massachusetts businessman, King studied law before volunteering to join his. militia for the American War of independence. He was elected to the Massachusetts Court in 1783 and to the Union Congress the following year. At the Philadelphia Convention of 1787, he became a leading nationalist, calling for increased power for the federal government. After the convention, King returned to Massachusetts, where he used his influence to help secure the ratification of the new Constitution.
