Sein bekanntestes Werk ist sein Stück Waiting for Godot aus dem Jahr 1953. Beckett erhielt 1969 den Nobelpreis für Literatur "für sein Schreiben, das - in neuen Formen für den Roman und das Drama - in der Not des modernen Menschen seine Erhebung erlangt". Er wurde 1984 zum Saoi von Aosdána gewählt.
