Er war Professor an der Fakultät für Physik und Astronomie der Universität Heidelberg und baute die Abteilung Nanobiophotonik am Physicist Max-Planck-Institut für biophysikalische Chemie auf. Er wurde in Rumänien geboren und wuchs in Santana auf, bevor er 1978 mit seinen Eltern nach Westdeutschland übersiedelte.Er ist auch ein Innovator, der das Konzept für das 4Pi-Mikroskop entwickelt hat.Er ist mit Anna verheiratet und hat drei Kinder mit ihr: Jonathan, Sebastian und Charlotte.Er teilt sich den Nobelpreis für Physik mit dem amerikanischen Neurobiologen Roderick MacKinnon.
