Er gründete das Musiklabel Transition Records und produzierte die Debüt-EP Sun Song des Jazz-Stars Sun Ra, nachdem er sowohl an der Fisk University als auch in Harvard studiert hatte. Er und Frank Zappa arbeiteten beide als Produzenten am Album Freak Out! der Mothers of Inventions für Verve Records im Jahr 1966.Er wuchs in Waco, Texas, als Sohn von Fannie und Thomas Wilson auf. Schließlich zog er nach Los Angeles, Kalifornien, wo er mit Ende vierzig an einem Herzinfarkt starb.Eric Burdon & The Animals' Eric Is Here, veröffentlicht 1966, wurde von ihm produziert.
