William Calvert Kneale is the English logician best known for his 1962 book The Development of Logic, a history of logic from the earliest days of the Greek foundation written with his wife, Martha. Kneale is also known as a philosopher of science and author of a book on probability and inductance. Trained at the Liverpool Institute for Boys, he then went on to study at Exeter College, Oxford, and in 1960 he succeeded White's professor of ethical philosophy, previously headed by the philosopher. L. Austin. He retired in 1966 .
