Konrad Zuse ist ein deutscher Bauingenieur, wegweisender Informatiker, Erfinder und Unternehmer. Seine größte Errungenschaft war der erste programmierbare Computer der Welt; im Mai 1941 ging die funktionsfähige, programmgesteuerte Turing-Complete Z3 in Betrieb. Dank dieser Maschine und ihrer Vorgänger gilt Zuse oft als Erfinder des modernen Computers. Zuse erregte die Aufmerksamkeit des S2-Rechners, der als erster Prozessleitrechner galt. 1941 gründete er eine der ersten Computerfirmen und machte den Z4 zum ersten kommerziellen Computer der Welt. Von 1943 bis 1945 entwarf er Plankalkül, die erste höhere Programmiersprache. 1969 schlug Zuse in seinem Buch Rechnender Raum das Konzept des computergestützten Universums vor. Ein Großteil seiner frühen Arbeit wurde durch Familie und Handel finanziert, aber nach 1939 erhielt er Mittel von der NS-Regierung.
