Dorothy Johnson Vaughan is an African American mathematician and computer scientist who worked for the National Advisory Committee on Aerospace and NASA, at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. In 1949, she became the Supervisory Authority of West Area Computers, the first African-American woman to get a promotion and oversee a group of staff at the center. After that, she was officially promoted to the position of supervisor. During his 28-year career, Vaughan prepared for the advent of computers in the early 1960s by teaching himself and his employees the Fortran programming language. She later headed the programming division of the Analysis and Computing Division at Langley. Vaughan is one of the women in Margot's story. Lee Shetterly Hidden Figures: A Tale of African American Women Who Won the Space Race. It was adapted into a biopic of the same name, also released in 2016

Her work with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the predecessor to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, made her a household name. She'd be the first African-American woman to lead the NACA's personnel department.
