Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister was an English mid-range athlete and neuroscientist who ran the first four minutes or less. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Bannister set a British 1,500-meter record and finished fourth. This feat further strengthened his determination to be the first athlete to complete a one-mile race in less than 4 minutes. He completed this feat on May 6, 1954 on the Iffley Road in Oxford, with Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher as the speed providers.
