Alfred Blalock is an American surgeon best known for his research in shock health as well as Fallot's quadriplegic - commonly known as blue baby syndrome. He created, with the help of research and laboratory assistant Vivien Thomas and pediatric cardiologist Helen Taussig, Blalock-Thomas-Taussig Shunt, a surgical procedure to reduce cyanosis of quadruple Fallot evidence. This surgery has ushered in the modern era of heart surgery. He has worked at both Vanderbilt University and Johns Hopkins University, where he both attended college and dean of surgery. He is known as a medical pioneer who has won various awards including the Albert Lasker Prize for Clinical Medical Research. Blalock has also been nominated several times for the prestigious Nobel Prize in Medicine.
