Anton Olmstead Myrer is a United States Navy veteran and best-selling American war novelist who accurately and sensitively portrays the lives of United States Army officers in combat and in peacetime. His 1968 novel, Once An Eagle, written during the height of the Vietnam War, was in demand of all Marines and is often used in leadership training courses at West Point. The novel, considered the classic work of military literature and instructing honorable conduct in the arms profession, has been favorably compared with Leo Tolstoy's book War and Peace. Eight years after its publication, Once an Eagle became a television hit starring Sam Elliott. Glenn Ford plays a supporting role. Myrer wrote eight other novels, of which The Big War was adapted into a movie in 1958 and The Last Convertible was made into a television miniseries in 1979. Once An Eagle and The Last Convertible became bestsellers. most in the world and translated into 19 languages.
