Billy Murcia is the original drummer for the New York Dolls. He was born in Bogota, Colombia and raised in Jackson Heights, New York, United States. Billy Murcia and Sylvain Sylvain both attended Quintano Young Professionals School in the late 1960s. At Quintano, they met Johnny Thunders, who was also a student there. They debuted the musical in 1967, in a group called "The Pox". They own and co-manage a clothing business called "Truth and Soul". Murcia is the basis for the original sound of the New York Dolls and performed on their legendary weekly series at the Mercer Center for the Arts. During a brief tour of the UK in 1972, Murcia was invited to a party where he lost consciousness due to an accidental overdose. In an attempt to revive him, he was put in a bath and forced to eat coffee, resulting in suffocation and death. He died before the New York Dolls recorded their first album and was later replaced by Jerry Nolan in 1973 .
