Carter G. Woodson
Carter Godwin Woodson is an American historian, author, journalist, and founder of the African American Association for Life and History Studies. He was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African community, including African-American history. As the founder of Black History Magazine in 1916, Woodson is known as "the father of black history". In February 1926, he launched the celebration of "Black History Week", the precursor of Black History Month. Born in Virginia, the son of former slaves, Woodson had to delay his studies while working at coal mines in West Virginia. He graduated from Berea College and became a teacher and school administrator. He graduated from the University of Chicago and in 1912 was the second African American, after W. E. B. Du Bois, received his doctorate from Harvard University.
