Charles Cornwallis
Charles Cornwallis, first Marquis of Cornwallis, was appointed Viscount Brome between 1753 and 1762 and known as Earl Cornwallis between 1762 and 1792, was a general and official in the British Army. In the United States and Great Britain, he is best remembered as one of the main British generals of the American War of Independence. Its surrender in 1781 to a combined American and French force during the siege of Yorktown ended major conflicts in North America. He was then civil and military governor of Ireland, where he helped put in place the Union Act; and in India, where he helped promulgate the Cornwallis Code and the permanent regulations. After his father's death in 1762, he became Count Cornwallis and entered the House of the Lords. From 1766 to 1805, he was a colonel of the 33rd infantry regiment.
