He played most of his international cricket in the late 1970s and was Sunil Gavaskar's regular opening partner during this time. Chetan Chauhan was appointed NIFT President from June 2016 to June 2017. He was also elected twice to Lok Sabha Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, between 1991 and 1998. From 2018 to 2020, he was Minister of Youth and Sports in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in India. On July 12, 2020, he was hospitalized after he tested positive for COVID-19. He died of complications and multi-organ failure on August 16, 2020 at the age of 73
