Ernest Dominic Capers is an American football coach, he is a senior defensive assistant for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League. Previously, he was the first head coach of the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans in four seasons. Capers is the only head coach to lead two different NFL expansions in their first season. As a defensive assistant for most of his coaching career, Capers served his first position as defense coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1992. He left Pittsburgh to become the Panthers' head coach in 1995, where he guided the team to a 7-9 record, the best result for the NFL expanding franchise in their first season. The following year, Capers led the Panthers to the NFC West Championship and the NFC Championship Game, making it the youngest NFL expansion franchise to win division rights and compete in a conference championship.
