Donald Franklin Kardong is a runner and author from the United States; he finished fourth in the men's marathon at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics, just three seconds behind the bronze medalist. In 1998, a controversy erupted over the steroid use of East German athletes at the 1976 Summer Olympics, including gold medalist Waldemar Cierpinski. If the medals were only reallocated to narcotic athletes, the American Frank Shorter would win the gold; followed by silver medalist Karel Lismont of the Belgian team and bronze medalist Don Kardong for the American Team. Kardong graduated from the prestigious Seattle Prep College in 1967, received a BA in Psychology from Stanford University in 1971, and in 1974, another BA in English and a teaching certificate from the University of Washington at Seattle. He then taught at Spokane from 1974 to 1977 at Loma Vista Primary School.
