George Pickett
George Edward Pickett was a professional United States Army officer who became Major General in the US Federal Army during the US Civil War. He is best remembered for being one of the commanders of Pickett's Charge, the Southern Alliance's bloody and futile attack on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg bearing his name. Pickett graduated the last of 59 officer cadets from the United States Military Academy in 1846. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and is credited with serving in the Battle of the United States. Chapultepec in September 1847. He later served in Washington Territory and eventually reached the rank of captain. Pickett fought in the Pig Wars in 1859. Towards the start of the American Civil War, he was appointed to the Union Army and promoted to lieutenant general in January 1862. He commanded a brigade which undertook heavy actions during the peninsular campaign of 1862 .
