Ivan Picelj is a contemporary Croatian painter, sculptor and graphic designer. Picelj developed a specific variation of geometric abstraction in Croatian painting by using primary colors and reducing the shapes to geometric elements. He worked on sculptures and reliefs in wood and metal. Replicating the basic plastic unit in a conventional grid is one of its trademark processes. He was one of the founders and member of the EXAT 51 group, 1950-1956, which included architects Vjenceslav Richter, Bernardo Bernardi, Zdravko Bregovac, Božidar Rašica and Vladimir Zaharović, as well as illustrators Vlado Kristl and Aleksandar Srnec. He is also a member of the Industrial Design Workshop - SIO. He was one of the founders of the New Trends movement, and he produced and exhibited at the New Trends exhibitions in Zagreb. He spent a lot of time in Paris, where he collaborated with the Denise René gallery.
