Iain David McGeachy, known by his stage name John Martyn, is an English singer, songwriter and guitarist. During his career spanning more than 40 years, he has released 23 studio albums and regularly receives rave reviews. The Times described him as "an excellent guitarist and singer with music that blurs the lines between folk, jazz, rock and blues." Martyn began his career at the age of 17 as a key member of British folk music, inspired by American blues and traditional British music, and signed with Island Records. By the 1970s he had started incorporating jazz and rock into his sound on albums like Solid Air and One World, as well as experimenting with guitar effects and delay machines like Echoplex. He struggled with drug addiction and household issues throughout the 1970s and 1980s, although he continued to release albums while collaborating with characters like Phil Collins and Lee "Scratch" Perry. He remained active until his death in 2009 .
