Louis Pierre Althusser was a French Marxist philosopher. He was born in Algeria and studied at the École Normale of the University of Paris, where he eventually became a professor of philosophy. Althusser was a longtime member - although at times a powerful critic - of the French Communist Party. His arguments and his thesis aim to counter the threats he sees attacking the theoretical foundations of Marxism. These include the influence of empiricism on Marxist theory and humanist socialist orientations and reforms which manifest themselves in divisions within European Communist Parties, as well as the question of "personality cult" and ideology. Althusser is often referred to as a structural Marxist, although his relationship with other schools of French structuralism is not straightforward and he criticized many aspects of structuralism. Althusser's life was marked by episodes of intense mental illness.
