Maria Lourdes "Meilou" Aranal Sereno is a Filipino lawyer and judge, serving as de facto chief justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines from 2012 until being impeached in 2018. President Benigno Aquino III appointed in August 2010, she became the second youngest to assume the position of Chief Justice in August 2012. She is considered the first woman to head a judiciary in a sovereign Southeast Asian country. She was dismissed by the Supreme Court's 8–6 ruling on a warranted petition, rendering her appointment as chief judge ineffective. Many supporters as well as legal experts consider the impeachment of Sereno, who opposes President Duterte's declaration of martial law in Mindanao and other legal actions, as politically motivated and unconstitutional.
