Māris Rūdolfs Liepa is a Latvian ballet dancer from the Soviet Union. He graduated from the Riga Choreographer School where he was taught by Valentin Blinov. He performed for the first time in Moscow in 1950. At the height of his career, Liepa was considered one of the best male dancers in the world and one of the most versatile artists at home with many different roles. In 1953, Liepa began studying at the Moscow Choreography School in a class taught by Nikolay Tarasov and initially developed as a character dancer, but after graduating he became a classical ballet dancer. . After graduating from the Moscow Choreographer School in 1955, he returned to Riga and went to the Latvian Musical Theater. The theater company held a road show in Moscow in December of the same year, where Māris Liepa was noticed by one of the Bolshoi prima ballet theaters in the Maya Plisetskaya. She invited Liepa to join her ballet crew on a tour in Budapest in 1956
