Mark Edward Smith is an English singer and songwriter, lead vocalist, lyricist and sole permanent member of the post-punk band The Fall. Smith formed the group after attending the Sex Pistols show in June 1976 in Manchester and was the frontman until his death. Over its 42 year history, Fall's roster consisted of around 60 musicians with whom Smith released 32 studio albums and several singles and EPs. Smith has a difficult and complex personality and is a long-time alcoholic. He is known for his witty and determined humor, which is evident in the interviews, which he has been in high demand by music journalists throughout his career. He doubts the pitfalls of popularity and largely avoids hanging out with people involved in the music scene, including other Fall members. The dark and sarcastic side of his character often appears in his lyrics; he especially didn't care about people in the music industry.
