She pursued her doctorate. from Cornell University in 1975, where she received the Ford Foundation's Ph.D. Scholarship in Molecular Genetics. She has a doctorate. in 1975 and moved through the ranks from postdoctoral to president and genetic consultant at her own company, Harris & Associates, Ltd. in Atlanta, Georgia. Since 1987, Harris has been the founder and owner of BioTechnical Communications, the company that has produced the award-winning 40-minute special TV special "Dear my sister ... A Gift for Life". Harris focuses on his television and radio media products on African-American health issues. These include advocacy for the need to detect breast cancer early, the genetics of sickle cell disease and understanding problems related to diabetes.
