Marvin Neil Simon is an American playwright, screenwriter and author. He has written over 30 plays and is close to the number of screenplays, most of which are adaptations of his plays. He has received more Oscar and Tony Award nominations combined than any other writer. Simon grew up in New York City during the Great Depression. His parents' financial difficulties affected their marriage, giving him a rather unhappy and unstable childhood. He often takes refuge in movie theaters, where he likes to see early actors like Charlie Chaplin. After graduating from high school and serving a few years in the Air Force Reserve, he began writing comedy scripts for popular radio shows and early TV shows. These include Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows and The Phil Silvers Show, which ran from 1955 to 1959. His first work produced was Come Blow Your Horn. It took him three years to complete and has run for 678 Broadway shows.
