Margaret Cecile "Peggy" Parish is an American writer known for her series of children's books and her fictional character Amelia Bedelia. Parish was born in Manning, South Carolina to a poor family, attended the University of South Carolina, and received a Bachelor of Arts in English. She works as a teacher in Oklahoma, Kentucky and New York. She taught at Dalton School in Manhattan for 15 years and published her first children's book while teaching third grade there. She is the author of more than 30 books, having sold 7 million copies at the time of her death. The most popular character in the parish, Amelia Bedelia, is extremely literal and interprets idioms and verbal expressions, which is a lot of fun in each story. This idea stems from conversations between Parish and Greenwillow Books founder Susan Hirschman about the author's observations of her third-graders.
