The Statler Brothers are an American country music, gospel, and vocal group. The quartet was formed in 1955 to perform locally and from 1964 to 1972 they sang as the opening singer and backup vocalist for Johnny Cash. Initially playing gospel music in local churches, the band was called The Four Star Quartet, then The Kingsmen. In 1963, when the song "Louie, Louie" by the garage rock band known as The Kingsmen rose to fame, the band was cast as The Statler Brothers. Regardless of the name, only two of the group members are real brothers, and neither member bears the Statler name. The group is actually named after a label of tissue they noticed in a hotel room. Don Reid sings the lead role; Harold Reid, Don's brother, sings bass; Phil Balsley sings a southerly voice; and Lew DeWitt sang soprano and guitarist for Statlers before being replaced by Jimmy Fortune in 1983 due to DeWitt's poor health.
