Richard Hetherington "Dick" O'Kane was a United States Navy submarine commander during World War II, who received the Medal of Honor for commanding the USS Tang during the Pacific War against the Japan. The most successful continent of all American submarines. . He also received three naval crosses and three silver stars, totaling seven awards in the top three US military ornaments for bravery in combat. Prior to Command Tang, O'Kane served on the highly successful USS Wahoo as a Directing and Approach Officer under the command of Commander Dudley "Mush" Morton. In 10 combat patrols, five times in Wahoo and five times in Tang's command, O'Kane participated in more successful attacks on Japanese ships than any other submarine officer during the war.
