Shiraz is the fifth most populous city in Iran and is the capital of the province of Fars, also known as Pars and Persis. The modern city was founded or restored by the Umayyads in 693 and developed during Iran's successive Saffarid and Buyid dynasties in the 9th and 10th centuries. In the 13th century, Shiraz became a major center of art and correspondence, due to the encouragement of the ruler and the presence of many Persian scholars and artists.
