Silvestre Santana Herrera was First Class Private in the US Army, who received the Medal of Honor for his heroic deeds in Mertzwiller, France during World War II. After a personal attack on an enemy stronghold leading to the single capture of eight enemy soldiers, his unit was attacked by a machine gun position on another minefield. Herrera again that day alone facing the enemy. While crossing the second minefield, he lost one leg due to a landmine explosion and his other leg as a result of the second explosion. Unable to resume his solo attack and despite losing a lot of blood, he maintained the forward position with one hand to provide cover fire, pinning enemies with his M1 Garand. His sniper rifle allows his teammates to overtake enemy positions in minefield flank action.
