Thomas Robert Cech is an American chemist who shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Sidney Altman, because they discovered the catalytic properties of RNA. Cech found that RNA itself could cut RNA strands, suggesting that life could start from RNA. He also studied telomeres and his lab discovered an enzyme, TERT, that is part of the recovery of telomeres after they shorten during cell division. As president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, he promoted science education and taught an undergraduate chemistry course at the University of Colorado.
