Wantha Davis is an American racetrack racer. Born Wantha Lorena Bangs near Liberal, Kansas, she married horse breeder Lendol Davis. After graduating from high school, Bangs took a cargo train to Texas, where she found work in a stable at a purebred racecourse. A year later, she returned to Kansas, where she began her horse racing career. Competing in a dominant male sport, over the next twenty years, Davis won more than a thousand races at a time when women were denied a license. Her success was so successful that many great sports writers considered her to be one of the best horse racer athletes in America. In 1949, she defeated the great Johnny Longden in an exhibition race at the Agua Caliente Racecourse in Tijuana, Mexico, prompting Longden to immediately request a rematch. A few months later, on April 30, 1950, Davis followed with a similar race victory over the Racing Museum and Avenue of Fame's future horse racer, Jack Westrope.
