Clare Short is a British politician who served as Secretary of State for International Development under Prime Minister Tony Blair from 1997 to 2003. Short was Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood from 1983 to 2010; for much of that time she was a member of the Labor Congress, but resigned as party whip in 2006 and served the remainder of her term as an independent. She ran as a Member of Parliament in the 2010 general election. Just before retiring to Congress in 2010, she was heavily criticized by her political party for declaring support for a suspended parliament, a situation which subsequently arose in the 2010 election
