Karl Landsteiner fue un biólogo, médico e inmunólogo austriaco. Distinguió los principales grupos sanguíneos en 1900, habiendo desarrollado el moderno sistema de clasificación de grupos sanguíneos a partir de su identificación de la presencia de aglutininas en la sangre, y en 1937 identificó, con Alexander S. Wiener, el factor Rhesus, permitiendo así a los médicos transfundir sangre sin poner en peligro la vida del paciente.
