Peter Douglas Beattie is a former Australian politician who was the 36th Prime Minister of Queensland, in office from 1998 to 2007. He was the leader of the Labor Party from 1996 to 2007. Beattie was born in Sydney but raised in Atherton, Queensland. He worked as a lawyer, union secretary and secretary of state for the ALP before entering politics. Beattie was elected to the Queensland Legislative Council in the 1989 national election. He served as Minister of Health from 1995 to 1996 under Wayne Goss, then replaced Goss as party leader following a change of government. As leader of the opposition, Beattie brought the Labor Party back to power in the 1998 election and won even more victories in the 2001, 2004 and 2006 elections. He retired in 2007 and was replaced by his assistant Anna Bligh. After retiring as Prime Minister, Beattie was appointed to a series of corporate governments and university councils, while simultaneously holding several academic positions.
