Teresa d'Ávila, de soltera Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada, también conocida como Santa Teresa de Jesús, es una noble española que se siente llamada a la Iglesia católica. Como monja carmelita, famosa mística española, reformadora religiosa, autora, teóloga de la vida contemplativa y espiritual, marcó una rara diferencia; es declarada Doctora de la Iglesia, pero no más de cuatro siglos después de su muerte. Activa en la Reforma Católica, reformó los Carmelitas para mujeres y hombres. A su movimiento se unieron entonces el joven monje carmelita español y el místico Juan de la Cruz. Esto eventualmente condujo al establecimiento de los Carmelitas Descalzos. En 1580 se emitió un decreto papal oficial que aprobaba la separación del antiguo orden. Teresa, que solía ser una figura prominente en la sociedad en su provincia natal, estaba preocupada por la pérdida temprana de la familia y los problemas de salud.
