Charles Cornwallis, first Marquis of Cornwallis, was appointed Viscount Brome between 1753 and 1762 and known as Earl Cornwallis between 1762 and 1792, was a general and official in the British Army. In the United States and Great Britain, he is best remembered as one of the main British generals of the American War of Independence. Born into an aristocratic family and educated in Eton and Cambridge, Cornwallis joined the army in 1757, witnessing the action during the Seven Years' War. After his father's death in 1762, he became Count Cornwallis and entered the House of the Lords. From 1766 to 1805, he was a colonel of the 33rd infantry regiment.
