A reviewer from Prick magazine called Heath "the godfather of rockabilly and modern psychiatry." The group formed in 1986, performing their first concerts in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas. Its current members, Jim "Reverend Horton" Heath, played guitar and sang lead vocals and Jimbo Wallace played double bass. The band signed with Victory Records on November 27, 2012 and released their 12th studio album, Whole New Life, on December 4, 2018. The band describes themselves as influenced by rock and roll. 1950s country, surf, punk, big band, swings and rockabilly standards. The group mixes these influences into strong and energetic songs with often humorous lyrics. Video games, cartoons, and commercials used the band's songs, making the Rev. Horton Heat look mainstream.

Jim Heath is the leader of the psychobilly duo The Reverend Horton Heat, and is known by his stage name Reverend Horton Heat. The band has roughly a dozen albums under their belt, and its songs have appeared on the soundtracks of various video games, including Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero.
