Christopher John "Chris" McCarron is a retired American Avenue of Fame runner. He rode his first horse at 16.5 and raced professionally at the age of 18. Just 19 years old, Chris McCarron had a spell that put his mounts into a 547 winner's circle times in 1974, breaking all records for most races won in a year. The previous record was set by Sandy Hawley in 1973 with 515 wins in a year. He was introduced to the sport of purebred racing by his brother, horse racing athlete Gregg McCarron. Chris McCarron began racing professionally in 1974 at East Coast races, where he won the 1974 Eclipse Prize for Outstanding Apprentice Racers in the United States. He moved to California racing in 1977, a year he won his first of three victories at Kentucky Oaks. In 1980, he won the Eclipse Award for Best Jockey as Best Overall Racer and that same year his colleagues awarded him the prestigious George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.
