Elliott Sharp is a contemporary American classical composer, multi-instrumentalist and performer. A central figure in pioneering and experimental New York music since the late 1970s, Sharp has released more than 85 records ranging from contemporary classical, avant-garde, improvisation, free, jazz, experimental and orchestral music to background noises and to electronic music. He pioneered the use of personal computers in performing arts with his Virtual Stance project in the 1980s. He has used algorithms and fibonacci numbers in experimental components since the 1970s. He thinks that literature is his music inspiration and often favors improvisation. He is a talented performer who mainly plays guitar, saxophone and bass clarinet. Sharp has conducted many blues-oriented concerts over the years, including the Terraplane and the Orchestra Carbon.
