Huldrych Zwingli or Ulrich Zwingli is a Reform leader in Switzerland born in an era of rising Swiss patriotism and growing criticism of the Swiss mercenary system. He studied at the Universities of Vienna and University of Basel, an academic center for Renaissance humanism. He continued his studies while pastor in Glarus and later in Einsiedeln, where he was influenced by Erasmus' works. In 1519, Zwingli became the Leutpriester of Grossmünster in Zürich, where he began preaching ideas about reforming the Catholic Church. During his first public controversy in 1522, he attacked the vegetarian custom of Lent. In his publications, he noted corruption in the church hierarchy, promoting clerical marriages and attacking the use of images in places of worship.
