Mary Edwards Walker, M.D., commonly known as Dr. Mary Walker, is an American abolitionist, ban, prisoner of war, and surgeon. She is the only woman ever to receive the Medal of Honor. In 1855, she graduated from Syracuse Medical College in New York City, married and began practicing medicine. She volunteered to join the Union Army at the beginning of the US Civil War and worked as a surgeon at a temporary hospital in Washington, although at the time women and cult doctors were considered disliked. for the Military Examination Council.
