Petar Kočić is a Serbian writer, activist and politician. Born in Bosnia's rural northwestern region in the final days of the Ottoman regime, Kočić began writing in the early 20th century, first in poetry and then in prose. As a university student, he was active in politics and began campaigning for land reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was occupied by Austro-Hungarian after the Ottomans withdrew in 1878. The other reforms requested by Kočić are freedom of the press and freedom of assembly, which were rejected during the Austro-Hungarian era. In 1902, Kočić published his first volume of short stories. He published two more short stories in 1904 and 1905, and later adapted one of his most successful short stories, The Badger on Trial, for the theatrical scene. Kočić then led several protests in Sarajevo and was jailed three times for publishing newspapers criticizing the Habsburg regime.
