Sarojini Naidu is an Indian political activist and poet. A defender of civil rights, women's emancipation and anti-imperialist ideas, she was an important figure in India's struggle for independence from colonialism. Naidu's work as a female poet has earned her the title of "The Song of India" or "Bharat Kokila" by Mahatma Gandhi for the colors, images and lyrical qualities of her poetry. Born into a Bengali family in Hyderabad, Naidu was educated in Madras, London and Cambridge. After her stay in England, where she acted as a fighter, she was drawn into the Indian parliamentary movement for the independence of India from British rule. She became a part of the Indian nationalist movement and became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his idea of swaraj. She was appointed President of the National Congress of India in 1925, then became Governor of the United Provinces in 1947, becoming the first woman to hold the post of Chief Governor of India.
