Sorley MacLean
Sorley MacLean is a Scottish Gaelic poet, described by the Scottish Poetry Library as "one of the great Scottish poets of modern times" for "his mastery of selected media and his dedication to the tradition of the European poetic system and European politics" . Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney credits MacLean with safeguarding Scottish Gaelic poetry. He was raised in a strict Presbyterian family on the Isle of Raasay, immersed in Gaelic culture and literature from birth, but abandoned religion for socialism. In the late 1930s, he befriended many prominent Scottish Renaissance figures, such as Hugh MacDiarmid and Douglas Young. He was wounded three times while serving in the Royal Signal Corps during the operation in North Africa. MacLean didn't publish much after the war, due to his perfectionism. In 1956 he became the principal teacher at Plockton High School, where he advocated the use of the Gaelic language in formal education.
