She is credited with developing the cult genre of poetry and is best known for her two published collections, The Colossus and Other Poems and Ariel, as well as The Bell Jar, a semi-novel. her autobiography was published just before her death in 1963. The collected poems were published in 1981 and include many unpublished works. For this collection, Plath received the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1982, making her the fourth person after receiving the honor. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Plath studied at Smith College in Massachusetts and Newnham College in Cambridge, England. She married fellow countryman Ted Hughes in 1956, and they lived together in the United States, then in England. Their relationship is in turmoil, as Plath writes in letters about the abuse she has suffered at the hands of him. They had two children before their separation in 1962 .
