Kroll served in the United States Army in World War II and won three Purple Hearts after being wounded four times. Shortly after the war, he took a position as a professional assistant at the Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. He started a 34-year career on the PGA Tour in 1949. He won the tour eight times, including three victories in 1956, when he topped the monetization list with a winnings of 72,836. dollars. That same year, he lost to Jack Burke Jr., 3 and 2. In the PGA Championship final, in 1954, Kroll became the third player in PGA Tour history to shoot 60, along with Al Brosch and Bill Nary. He scored 30-30 at Brackenridge Park Golf Course in the third round of the Texas Open. His last 11 put him on a sixth draw that went into the final round, where he shot 2 under 69 in his last 18 holes to make the ninth.
