Tomás Rivera is a Chicano author, poet and educator. He was born in Texas as a migrant farm worker and worked in the fields as a boy. However, he gained social mobility through education - earning a degree from Southwest Texas State University, then a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oklahoma - and was a firm believer in the qualities of Mexican-American education. . Rivera is best remembered as an author for his 1971 Faulknerian novel on the stream of consciousness ... y no se lo tragó la tierra, translated into English under the title This Migrant Earth and as ... and the Earth Did Not Devour Him. This book won the first Premio Quinto Sol award. Rivera teaches in high schools in the Southwestern United States, then at Sam Houston State University and the University of Texas at El Paso.
