3 Idiots is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani and co-written by him and Abhijat Joshi, based on Chetan Bhagat's novel Five Point Someone. Starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani and Omi Vaidya, the film follows the friendship of three students at an Indian engineering college and is a satire about the social pressures under an Indian education system. The film is narrated through parallel dramas, one in the present and the other ten years in the past. Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra under the banner Vinod Chopra Films, the film incorporated real Indian inventions created by Remya Jose, Mohammad Idris, Jahangir Painter and Sonam Wangchuk. It received critical acclaim and huge commercial success upon its release on 25 December 2009.
